Entry 8: My Native Language

Image
Coming a long way from home, from Bangkok, Thailand to Greencastle, Indiana, there have been numerous changes in my life. However, one of the most common questions I was asked was about the differences between the two languages and which one I preferred. The two languages I speak are very different and have little in common; nonetheless, I am fluent in both due to my background.I would say I am fluent in both, but I think I should analyze each portion more thoroughly. Listening:   In terms of listening, I am confident that I am well-versed in both languages. Since my family has always spoken Thai and we use it regularly, I am very familiar with it. In terms of English, despite the fact that I did not grow up in an English-speaking family, I still have a fairly English environment at school because I was surrounded by native teachers since elementary school. However, if I had to choose which language I am more comfortable ease with, I would definitely an...

Entry 7: That is some 'BIG' words

Image
A common misconception among students, particularly international students, is that incorporating 'Big' words in their paper will help strengthen it. The term 'Big' word refers to words that have an extremely complicated spelling or are difficult to pronounce, but are not widely used in daily life. The issue with utilizing such large terms is that occasionally students use them without fully understanding them. There are two reasons for this: first, they believe that using big words improves their essays, and second, they assume that the big words are synonyms for the terms they originally meant to use. This method is sometimes effective, but not always. If you don't understand the word but still use it, your essay may sound weird or completely incorrect. I wish to emphasize the common stereotype that using terms from a big vocabulary can strengthen the writing. To be honest, I'm one of those that doesn't see why big words are preferable. Yes, I bel...

Entry 6: Feedback Time

Image
Feedback is awesome!          Pe ople will probably call my ideas weird, but they are really what I think. Feedback is complimentary of my skills and accomplishments. Feedback also reveals flaws in my performance that I must confront and improve. In life, I know that I will never always get positive feedback to the point there will be occasions when I disagree with the comments I receive. However, I've discovered that embracing such feedback allows me to be a better version of myself. DePauw's first-year seminar classes are designed in a unique way. For their first semester of college, first-year students were chosen to a class at random. Depending on the class, each first-year student concentrates on a different topic, but we all have the same goal in mind: to improve our college writing skills. As a result, we have a lot of reading and writing assignments in this class, which means we get a lot of feedback on our writing skill...

Entry 5: Halftime Reflection

Image
Introduction For many of us, fall break served as a time of rest from the demanding time spent in class. For me, fall break was a halftime show, a chance to reflect on the first half of my first semester in college. Undoubtedly, my first semester of college was overwhelming. It was harder than I anticipated to arrange my own schedule and try to get to morning classes. It was more challenging interacting with both native and international students. Fortunately, I'm happy to say that in the first half of my semester, I overcame more of those challenges. My Writing Reflection One of the things I accomplished well in the first half was that I consistently completed my writing in a reasonable amount of time, either ahead of schedule or on deadline. I was reminded once again that I am a ‘precastinator’ type of person who detests procrastinating until the very last minute. If my work is not done to the best of my ability, I tend to be a little bit of a perfectionist. Another aspect of m...

Entry 4: Make use of the resources around you(ft. Professor Lynn Ishikawa)

Image
Being in college definitely means having more independence. I discovered that I have more time in a day to manage my own schedules; but  also that means that I need to accomplish more tough work. I believe that a common issue among college students is the perception that asking for assistance is weak. On this, I for one am in disagreement. I schedule an office hour with my professor when I have queries or even just challenging problems so we can work through them. During exam week, I go in and ask advice from my STEM mentor, who is very supportive of my learning style. I love and never hesitate to seek assistance when I need it. This is one of the skills that I believe I acquired at DePauw. There are a ton of resources at DePauw that can help students both academically and socially. The W-center is one of the resources that I particularly enjoy. In my first-year seminar class, I remember being given an assignment to write a brief summary, and I was comp...

Entry 3: Emails, Emails, and more Emails

Image
Social media is really crucial in my daily life. The first thing I did in the morning was check my Instagram to see if any of my colleagues had texted me or if any of my favorite celebrities had posted anything new. Throughout the day, I checked my Line to communicate with my family and friends back home, and I even occasionally called them too. One of my favorite pastimes is reading online novels written by amateur authors. I see a lot of imaginative writing and creativity in both English and my native language. Social media is a part of my everyday life, and the majority of it involves informal writing; however, emails cannot be written in the same tone.      Email writing had some influence on my life in high school. I saw that I did write a lot of emails back then, but compared to now, I would say I have received and written over a hundred emails now I'm in college. To be completely honest, learning how to compose acceptable emails is esse...
